J Rooting- a term for the incorrect planting of trees that result in the roots being balled up and generally planted too shallow.

We know that this factor can cause excessive limbiness and defect serious enough to make entire plantations virtually worthless.

J rooting can be caused directly by poor site preparation.   The ground must be capable of being planted cost effectively by tree planters.   Everyone wants to make money.  If the ground is hard to get the planting tool into and the planting prices are low then the chances of poor quality planting increases.

Planting quality is the second highest priority in achieving a successful plantation.  All too often we say good planting quality was achieved, but what we really mean is "good quality planting was achieved considering the site conditions at the time of planting." It does not necessarily mean that the roots were all straight, planting depth was correct and the right planting microsite was chosen.

Question: If optimum root growth is achieved would this be instrumental for achieving first log clear or higher quality faster growing trees?

Question: Genetically improved trees often carry characteristics of limbiness. Can genetics improve rooting characteristics? Or is this strictly a function of soil, nutrient, moisture, temperature conditions and interactions?
