The Logger should be responsible for the land preparation required for planting.
This is the most cost effective method of plantation preparation. Some of the reasons are:
1. Excavators are common on most modern logging operations and are already "on site" as Road builders, Loaders, Feller Bunchers, Processors, etc.. The logger may already own the principal machine and only require the attachment.
2. Land preparation is most easily done immediately after skidding is completed. Nitrogen from green organic matter can be mixed into the soil. The logger is familiar with the terrain and can rehab any logging damage or compaction. Fewer biological difficulties in establishment can be expected.
3. If machines are present on site, the extra cost of transportation can be avoided.
4. Costs can further be reduced by maximizing the total annual machine hours.
5. Fuel, maintenance and safety services are already organized on site for logging operations.
6. Seasonal logging operations can be extended to provide more machine hours for the logger and his employees. Availability of machinery to the plantation establishment company is greater.
7. Less weed control will be required if logging and replanting can be done concurrently.
8. Harsh environmental effects of logging can be buffered by expedient treatments.
9. The faster the forest is back into production, the easier it is on the soil re-building organisms and site productivity.
10. Seedling growth rates will increase with less need for weed control. Erosion and nutrient leaching can be avoided.
